Rimmel Scandal Eyes Mascara

Rimmel Scandal Eyes Mascara

The first thing to note about this mascara is the bright orange colour of the packaging, which makes it easy to find in the depths of ones make up bag. Unfortunately, this is one of the only positive things I have to say about this product. I usually consider Rimmel make up to be very good value for money, however this particular mascara falls below its usual standards.

First of all, the brush is too big and dense, which results in an unequal coating of mascara on the lashes.  This means that it takes a number of coats before your eyelashes are fully covered, creating a number of problems:

  • Your eyelashes stick together and look clumpy
  • It takes far too long to dry
  • After a couple of hours, the mascara starts to flake
  • Your eyelashes are left feeling heavy and shapeless

This mascara claims to elongate and curl eyelashes, whilst simultaneously making your eyes seem bigger.  I agree that this mascara elongates lashes, however only after a number of coats, which creates the aforementioned problems.  Fortunately, there are many similar types of mascara that can provide these benefits without any of these associated drawbacks.

Rimmel scandal eyes mascara is relatively cheap (£4.99 Boots), however other brands such as Maybelline offer better quality for around the same price.  The waterproof mascara in this range is a better product as the wand is not too dense and thus gives a more even coating.  However, it is worth noting that as with many waterproof mascaras, it can damage your eyelashes, as it is tough to remove.

I would not personally recommend this mascara as it is difficult to apply and does not give good results.  I think it makes more sense to spend a little bit more to purchase higher quality mascara such as Max Factor False Lash Effect Mascara.

This Mascara claims to provide a ‘false lash effect’, so let’s clarify what that means exactly.  When I wear false eyelashes, it is because I want thicker, longer lashes with more definition.  This mascara is great because it gets you as close to the effect of false eyelashes as is possible without actually wearing them.

Max Factor is at the high end of the high street brands and the prices reflect this (£10.99 Boots).  As a result, I do have higher expectations but it is fair to say that this mascara is the best I have bought in a while and really is worth the extra couple of pounds.

As with any mascara it takes a week to get used to, but it will genuinely add thickness and length to eyelashes without the irritating need for five coats, which can feel very heavy on the eyes.  A fantastic bonus with this mascara is that it provides great definition and therefore feels perfectly comfortable without eyeliner.  Further, it’s really easy to take off and does not irritate the eyes once removed.

I have only one qualm with this product, which is that it can begin to flake if worn for long periods of time.  This can leave your eyelashes feeling slightly crispy at the end of the day, though not to the degree I’ve noticed with some other brands.

Overall, I think this Mascara delivers on its promises and can get you as close as possible to the effect of false eyelashes without the stress of fiddling with glue in the often experienced 2am one on, one off situation.
